Arnaut Danièl (also spelled Arnaut Daniel or Arnaut Daniel de Riberac) was an Occitan troubadour active in the late 12th century. He composed and performed lyric poetry in Old Occitan (Provençal) and became renowned for a deliberately intricate and highly crafted style. Although only a small number of his songs survive, his reputation among medieval and later writers made him one of the best-known troubadours.
Style and forms
Danièl is associated with the trobar clus, a ‘‘closed’’ or obscure mode that favors compressed syntax, rare vocabulary, and elaborate rhyme and sound-play. He is often credited by later tradition with originating the sestina, a poetic pattern that repeats end-words in a fixed order across six stanzas and a final envoi; this innovation — whether by him or by contemporaries in his circle — exemplifies the technical ingenuity for which he was celebrated.
Works and themes
The surviving corpus includes a selection of cansos (love songs) and other lyric pieces that explore courtly love, admiration, and poetic craft. His language favors metaphor, subtle shifts of sense, and verbal puzzles that reward close reading. Editors and translators have produced modern editions and commentaries that make these pieces accessible to readers unfamiliar with Old Occitan.
Influence and legacy
Dante Alighieri and Francesco Petrarch both praised Arnaut Danièl, and Dante famously placed him among exemplary poets, calling him a master craftsman. Interest in Arnaut revived in later centuries: scholars of medieval Occitan, as well as modernist poets such as Ezra Pound, engaged with his work and admired its technical daring. His name remains a touchstone in discussions of medieval poetic technique and the development of fixed poetic forms.
