Lake County is a county located along the North Shore of the U.S. state of Minnesota. As recorded in the 2010 census, the county had a population of 10,866. The administrative center and largest service town is Two Harbors, which serves as the county seat.

Overview

Lake County occupies a stretch of shoreline on Lake Superior and includes large areas of forest, lakes, and rugged terrain. Its landscape supports outdoor recreation such as hiking, fishing, boating and winter sports, and the natural setting is a major draw for visitors and residents alike.

Economy and land use

Economic activity in the county traditionally centered on natural-resource industries, including logging and mining, and on commercial fishing near the lake. Today the local economy mixes those resource-based activities with tourism, recreation services, and small-scale manufacturing and retail that support year-round communities.

Government and services

The county government operates from Two Harbors, where administrative offices, courts, and public services are located. County responsibilities include road maintenance in rural areas, land-use planning, public safety coordination, and management of parks and recreational facilities.

Transportation and access

Major roads provide access along the lake shore and connect inland communities to regional centers. Seasonal tourism brings increased traffic in summer months, and winter conditions can affect travel, so maintenance and weather monitoring are important for local transportation planning.
