Arif Malikov (13 September 1933 – 9 May 2019) was a prominent Azerbaijani composer whose work became part of the Soviet and international ballet repertory. He achieved wide recognition for large-scale stage works and orchestral music that drew on local melodic traditions while using Western symphonic and ballet forms. His life and output are often discussed in the contexts of Azerbaijani national music and Soviet-era cultural exchange.

Musical style and approach

Malikov's music is noted for its lyrical melodies, colorful orchestration and frequent use of modal and folk-inspired themes. He combined idioms from Azerbaijani music—its modal scales and expressive vocal-like lines—with the demands of dramatic scoring for dance and theater. Critics and audiences have remarked on the emotional immediacy of his themes and the clear structural shapes he employed when writing for ballet and the concert hall.

Major works and productions

His first major stage success was the ballet Legend of Love, which brought him wide attention when it was staged at the Kirov State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Leningrad. That production traveled beyond the Soviet Union and was mounted in many countries across Europe. The ballet was inspired by an Oriental love legend and has been revived in multiple productions. For context on his national identity and work see Azerbaijani composer and the Kirov premiere is documented at Kirov Theatre. The work itself is a stage ballet in the classical tradition (ballet) and has been presented in theaters throughout Europe.

Legend of Love draws on the legend of Farhad and Shirin for its dramatic material. Malikov later composed other full-length ballets, notably Yer üzündə iki nəfər (often titled Two or Dvoe, 1967) and Poem of Two Hearts (1981), among works for orchestra and stage.

Career and legacy

Throughout his career Malikov wrote for a variety of forces and settings, including ballet companies, orchestras and occasional film projects. His ballets helped bring Azerbaijani musical themes to international stages during the mid-20th century and remain part of the historical repertory studied by dancers and music historians. He died on 9 May 2019 at the age of 85, leaving a body of work that continues to be performed and recorded.
