Overview
Kotagiri is a panchayat town in The Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the established hill stations of the Nilgiri Hills and is known for its temperate climate, rolling tea gardens and scenic views. According to the 2011 Census the town had a population of 28,207, comprising 13,607 males and 14,600 females. Administratively it functions as a local panchayat within the district.
Characteristics and landscape
Kotagiri sits within a landscape of undulating slopes, mixed plantation and native montane forest patches. The surrounding agricultural pattern is dominated by tea estates, smallholdings that cultivate vegetables and fruit, and pockets of shola grassland and forest typical of the higher Nilgiris. The town’s cooler weather and frequent mist make it attractive for visitors and support crops that do not thrive in lowland tropical climates.
History and people
The Nilgiris have long been home to indigenous communities such as the Toda, Kota, Kurumba and Irula peoples; their cultural presence and traditional knowledge shape parts of the district’s identity. During the 19th century parts of the Nilgiris, including Kotagiri, were developed as hill stations by colonial administrators and settlers who established tea and coffee plantations. Over time Kotagiri evolved into a quieter alternative to busier neighboring towns.
Natural environment
Kotagiri lies within the ecological reach of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, a region recognized for high biodiversity and endemism. Remnants of shola forests and montane grasslands provide habitat for a variety of birds, mammals and plants. Conservation concerns in the area focus on habitat protection, sustainable plantation practices and managing the pressures of tourism and development.
Tourism, economy and activities
The local economy blends tourism, plantation agriculture and small-scale trade. Visitors come for scenic drives, walks along ridge-top trails, birdwatching and to experience a less commercialized hill-station atmosphere. Typical activities include short treks, visits to viewpoints and buying locally grown tea and produce at village markets.
Practical information and notable facts
Kotagiri is usually reached by road from larger centers in the region and serves as a quieter gateway to the Nilgiris compared with Ooty and Coonoor. It is valued for its relaxed pace, accessible nature trails and agricultural landscape of tea gardens. For further regional context see the state and country pages: Tamil Nadu and India.
