The locality has local roots that reflect the broader historical pattern of rural Flanders: agricultural settlement, parish-centered life, and gradual 20th-century changes such as improved roads and commuter links. Administrative reforms in the 21st century led to the formal merger that ended Knesselare's status as an independent administrative unit.

Knesselare sits within the province of East Flanders and was one of several small municipalities in the region. Its landscape is mixed: farmland, small woods and built-up village areas. The community is closely connected to neighboring towns and the regional road network, which links residents to larger centres for work and services.
Population and governance
In 2007 the population of Knesselare was recorded at 7,894 inhabitants. Before the 2019 merger local affairs were managed by a municipal council and mayor, as typical for Belgian municipalities. After consolidation many local services and planning responsibilities were transferred to Aalter, while local identity and neighbourhood life continue.

The local economy has traditionally centered on agriculture, small businesses and services for residents. Many people commute to larger towns or to Ghent for employment. Public transport and road connections support daily mobility, and the village hosts community facilities such as churches, schools and shops.
