Creation and administrative status

The modern municipality was established on 1 January 2003 when it was separated from Uppsala Municipality. In Swedish it is known as Knivsta kommun. It is one of Sweden's many municipalities (municipality) that combine responsibilities for local infrastructure, education and social services under an elected council.

Geography and transport

Knivsta occupies a landscape of mixed farmland, small woodlands and compact settlements. Its location between larger urban centres makes it part of a commuter region; residents commonly travel by regional rail and bus services to nearby cities. Local roads link villages and provide access to wider national transport networks.

Economy, services and community life

The local economy blends agriculture, small businesses and services oriented to residents and commuters. The municipal government focuses on planning, schools, elder care and recreational facilities. Typical municipal responsibilities include:

  • Primary and secondary education
  • Local planning and building permits
  • Social services and elder care
  • Local roads and recreational areas

History and notable features

Although administratively young in its current form, the area has older cultural roots visible in parish churches, historic farms and small heritage sites. Knivsta is noted for balancing development with preservation of rural character and local nature areas, a priority in municipal planning and community activities.
