Klaipėda County is Lithuania's coastal county centered on the port city of Klaipėda. It combines maritime economy, resort coasts, the Curonian Spit, and a multicultural history tied to the Baltic region.

Klaipėda County is one of the ten primary territorial divisions of Lithuania. Geography and notable sites

The county is the only Lithuanian county with direct access to the Baltic Sea. Its coastline includes sandy beaches, dunes and the narrow Curonian Spit, a striking sandbar that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the open sea and is recognized for its unique landscapes. Much of the coastal strip supports tourism, nature reserves and small fishing communities.

Economy and transport

Klaipėda hosts Lithuania's main seaport: an ice-free, year-round harbor that handles cargo, ferries and ro-ro services. Maritime industries such as shipping, logistics, ship repair and fishing have long been important to the local economy. Coastal towns also rely on seasonal tourism, with beach resorts and cultural attractions drawing domestic and international visitors.

History and cultural background

The region has a layered history influenced by Baltic, Germanic and Scandinavian connections. The city of Klaipėda (historically known by its German name Memel) has shifted between different states and cultural spheres over centuries, leaving a legacy visible in architecture, place names and local traditions.

Administration and today's role

While counties remain recognized as territorial and statistical units, the formal county administrations in Lithuania were discontinued on 1 July 2010. Local governance is now exercised by municipal governments and national agencies. For administrative context, see the list of Lithuania's counties and municipal divisions: ten counties in Lithuania.

Visitors and researchers often note Klaipėda County for its combination of a functioning commercial port, important coastal ecology, and seaside resorts. The Curonian Spit and the cultural mix of the area are among the county's most distinctive features. Further information about the city and the region is available from local municipal sources and regional guides: Klaipėda resources.
