Career and contributions

Khoo served for many decades in the history department of the University of Malaya and later held the title of emeritus professor. His research focused on the history of the Malay world, modern Malaysian history and the development of national institutions. Beyond academic writing, he engaged actively in public discourse: delivering lectures, advising on curriculum matters, and participating in forums where history intersected with contemporary politics and social issues.

One of his most notable public roles was as a co-author of the Rukunegara, the Malaysian national philosophy formulated in the wake of the 1969 racial riots to promote unity and shared values. His involvement in that process contributed to his reputation as a scholar committed to bridging historical understanding and policy-oriented thinking.

Khoo was born in Kampar, in the state of Perak, into a family of Chinese heritage. In January 2011 he was named Chancellor of KDU University College, reflecting his standing in higher education.

Khoo Kay Kim died in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, on 28 May 2019 of respiratory failure at the age of 82. Obituaries and tributes at the time emphasized his influence on generations of students, his role in public life, and his contributions to the study and understanding of Malaysia's past.
