Kavar County

Kavar County is an administrative division in Fars Province, Iran, centered on the city of Kavar. Formed in 2011 from Shiraz County, it includes one district and a mixture of urban and rural communities.

Overview

Kavar County (Persian: شهرستان کوار) is an administrative unit in Iran, located within Fars Province. The county's administrative centre and only incorporated city is Kavar. As an entity it is relatively new: the area was separated from the larger Shiraz administrative area to form a distinct county in 2011. The county is officially recognised as a county within Iran's system of provinces and counties.

Administrative divisions and settlements

Kavar County is organized around a single bakhsh (district), commonly called the Central District. The county contains one city, Kavar, and a number of rural villages and agricultural settlements. Local governance is focused on municipal services in the city and basic administration of surrounding rural districts.

History and administrative development

Before 2011 the territory now known as Kavar County was administered as part of Shiraz County. The decision to create a separate county was part of a wider reorganisation of local government intended to give growing towns stronger local institutions. Census figures collected before the separation recorded the area's population as 72,423 in 15,570 families (2006); those numbers reflect the population of the area prior to its formal establishment as an independent county.

Geography, economy and society

The county lies within the central Fars region and combines an urban centre with surrounding agricultural land and villages. Economic activity is predominantly local: agriculture, small-scale trade and service industries that support the city and rural communities. Social life typically revolves around provincial and local traditions, with residents relying on nearby larger cities for specialised services and higher education.

Transport and regional role

Kavar functions as a local hub for surrounding villages, providing administrative services, markets and basic health and education facilities. Transport links connect the county with major roads in Fars Province and with the provincial capital, enabling movement of people and agricultural goods. The county's role is mainly regional rather than national in scope.
