For the later era named "Kashō" (sometimes romanized "Kajō") that began in 1106, see Kashō (late Heian period).

Overview

Kashō (Japanese: 嘉祥) was a Japanese era name (nengō) that followed Jōwa and came before Ninju. The era extended from June 848 through April 851.

Context and succession

The nengō system in Japan assigns a name to a span of years. The Kashō period covers the final years of one imperial reign and the beginning of the next: it includes the closing phase of Emperor Ninmyō's rule and the early years after the accession of Emperor Montoku.
