Kasaï-Central — province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Kasaï-Central is a province in central DRC created in 2015 with capital Kananga; it lies in the Kasai basin and is notable for agriculture, mining, Tshiluba language and recent development challenges.

Overview

Kasaï-Central is one of the 26 provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its administrative centre is the city of Kananga, which functions as the region’s largest urban hub and service centre. The province occupies part of the central Kasai river basin and combines urban, suburban and wide rural areas.

Geography and environment

The landscape consists mainly of rolling plateaus drained by tributaries of the Kasai River, with a tropical climate marked by wet and dry seasons. Soils and climate support a range of subsistence and market crops. Forested patches and savanna intermix across the province, creating varied habitats for agriculture and wildlife.

History and administration

Kasaï-Central was established in 2015 during a national territorial reorganisation that divided larger provinces into smaller units. It was formed from the former Lulua District together with the city of Kananga. The province is governed through provincial institutions and several territorial subdivisions; Kananga serves as the political and administrative capital seat.

Population, language and culture

The population is dominated by Tshiluba-speaking communities and other ethnic groups historically associated with the broader Kasai region. French is used for official matters. Local cultural life includes traditional music, dance and community ceremonies that reflect long-standing social structures.

Economy and main activities

The economy is largely based on smallholder agriculture, local trade and extractive activities. Principal economic roles include:

  • Subsistence and cash-crop farming (root crops, cereals, vegetables).
  • Artisanal and small-scale mining, including diamond mining in parts of the Kasai region.
  • Local commerce and services centred on Kananga as a transport and market node.

Recent developments and significance

The province has faced governance and security challenges in recent years that affected humanitarian and development conditions. At the same time, its central location, agricultural potential and urban services in Kananga make it an important area for regional recovery and investment.
