Kansas Department of Health and Environment: roles, programs, and structure

Core responsibilities

KDHE provides a range of services that affect daily life and long‑term wellbeing. Key roles include maintaining birth and death records, licensing certain health facilities, operating public health laboratories, coordinating responses to infectious disease outbreaks and public health emergencies, and implementing statewide environmental rules and permits. Many activities are delivered in partnership with local health departments and other agencies.

Programs and services

• Disease prevention and control, including immunizations and surveillance;
• Maternal and child health programs, nutrition assistance and chronic disease prevention;
• Environmental protection: air and water monitoring, waste regulation and remediation;
• Laboratory testing, emergency preparedness and public information campaigns;
• Administration of vital records and related certifications.

The department also issues guidance and enforces standards that affect hospitals, clinics, food establishments and industries. It compiles public health data and reports that inform policy, planning and community health improvement efforts.

KDHE is led by executive leadership appointed within the state government and works closely with county health departments, tribal health services, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Environmental Protection Agency.
