Overview

Kalat Division was an administrative unit in central Balochistan that covered a large, sparsely populated area centered on the historic city of Kalat (Qalat). It formed part of the modern provincial framework of Balochistan Province in Pakistan until nationwide changes to local government in 2000 abolished the divisional tier.

Geography and administration

The division encompassed semi‑arid plateaus, ranges of low mountains and desert plains. Its human geography included tribal settlements, small market towns and nomadic or semi‑nomadic pastoralists. As an administrative division it grouped several districts for provincial governance, coordination of services and judicial administration. Key population centres included the historic capital Kalat and surrounding district seats.

History and political development

The name and territorial identity derive from the Khanate of Kalat, a traditional polity in the region. In the early 1950s several princely states and entities in the area joined a short‑lived federation known as the Baluchistan States Union. That arrangement ended when the region was merged into West Pakistan under the One Unit policy, and later integrated into the provincial system of Pakistan. The divisional structure persisted until the 2000 administrative reforms, which replaced many divisional functions with district‑level local governments.

Economy, culture and importance

The economy of the area historically relied on livestock rearing, small‑scale agriculture in irrigated pockets, trade along local routes and, where present, extraction of mineral resources. Culturally the division is notable for the presence of Balochi and Brahui languages and for tribal political traditions centered on local chiefs. The city of Kalat remained a cultural and symbolic focal point for the region.

Legacy and notable facts
