Overview
John Turner (born about 1590) was one of the passengers on the 1620 voyage of the Mayflower and a signer of the Mayflower Compact. He embarked for the New World with two sons and took part in the establishment of Plymouth Colony’s earliest governing agreement. Beyond his presence on the ship and his signature on the Compact, documentary evidence about his origins and life before the voyage is limited.
Origins and identity
Very little is known about Turner’s early life. Contemporary records do not clearly identify his birthplace or occupation in England, and historians treat his background cautiously. Like several Mayflower passengers, he may have been connected with groups in England or Leiden, but surviving sources do not permit firm conclusions.
Voyage, the Compact, and settlement
Turner crossed the Atlantic aboard the Mayflower in 1620 accompanied by two sons. After the ship’s arrival at Cape Cod, the male passengers drafted and signed the Mayflower Compact, an early social contract for self-governance in the colony. Turner’s name is among the signatories, a fact often cited to confirm his participation in the settlement’s founding civic act. For the text and context of the agreement see the Mayflower Compact.
Death and burial
John Turner died during the first winter of 1620–1621, a period that claimed roughly half of the original passengers and many crew. Precise details of his death and burial site are not recorded; like numerous other early colonists, he is believed to have been interred in an unmarked or communal grave amid the colony’s dire conditions.
Family and legacy
Turner traveled with two sons who survived as part of the early passenger list, though their later lives and descendants are not well documented in primary sources associated with the colony’s records. Turner is remembered primarily for his role as one of the Compact signers, a symbolic contributor to the foundations of self-government in the English colonies.
