Overview
John Surtees (11 February 1934 – 10 March 2017) was a British racing driver notable for success on both two and four wheels. He remains the only competitor to have won a 500cc motorcycle world championship and the Formula One Drivers' Championship. Born in Tatsfield, Surrey, Surtees began his career on motorcycles before moving into single-seater car racing, and later established his own team.
Early life and motorcycle career
Surtees started competitive motorcycle racing in the early 1950s and soon became one of the leading riders in the premier 500cc class. He claimed multiple world championship titles in the 1950s, riding for factory teams and demonstrating exceptional bike control and racecraft. His accomplishments on two wheels brought him wide recognition and laid the foundation for his later move to car racing. For background on his motorcycle achievements see motorcycle records and profiles.
Transition to cars and Formula One
By 1960 Surtees had begun racing single-seater cars while still active on motorcycles. He quickly adapted to the different demands of car racing, achieving early podiums and pole positions in Grand Prix events. After stints with several teams he joined Scuderia Ferrari in the early 1960s. Driving for Ferrari he finished high in the standings and secured the 1964 Formula One Drivers' Championship, a close victory that is often noted for its narrow margin. Details of his F1 career and team associations are covered in numerous motorsport histories (Ferrari era, career overview).
Team ownership and later career
Surtees left full-time driving in the early 1970s and concentrated on running his own operation, the Surtees racing team. The team competed in Formula One, Formula Two and other categories through the 1970s. Under his leadership the outfit achieved successes across categories; for example, the team supported drivers who won races and championships in junior formulas. The Surtees team withdrew from Formula One at the end of the 1970s but remained a notable example of a driver-led constructor in that era. For more on the team and its results see team history.
