John Ray Broxson (June 10, 1932 – December 9, 2019) was an American public official from the Florida Panhandle. A member of the Democratic Party, Broxson combined careers in local law enforcement and state government. He is remembered in his home region for both his time as a county sheriff and for his single-term service in the state legislature.

Early life

Broxson was born in Holley, Florida, and raised in the surrounding communities of Santa Rosa County. His upbringing in a small coastal town shaped his familiarity with rural and coastal issues that would later appear in his public work. Holley and neighboring towns are part of the bioregion and local culture of the Florida Panhandle, where local government and public safety are important civic concerns.

Law enforcement and local government

Before and alongside his political activity, Broxson served as sheriff of Santa Rosa County. The office of county sheriff is responsible for law enforcement, jail administration, and certain court duties at the county level; sheriffs are often among the most visible local elected officials. Broxson's role as sheriff tied him closely to public safety and community governance in Santa Rosa County during his tenure.

State legislative service

Broxson served in the Florida Senate from 1967 through 1971. During that era, state legislatures addressed issues ranging from infrastructure and education to local government authority and economic development. As a state senator, he represented constituents from his district in the Panhandle region and participated in the lawmaking processes of Florida's government.

Later life and death

After leaving elected office, Broxson remained a figure in the local history of Santa Rosa County. He died on December 9, 2019, in Milton, Florida, at the age of 87. Milton and Holley lie within the same county and reflect the communities he served for much of his life.

Legacy and summary
