Early life and beginnings

Born in Abercynon in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Roberts progressed from local youth football into the professional ranks during the 1960s. He established himself as a reliable, no-nonsense player who could be deployed across the back line and was valued for his positional sense and commitment on the pitch.

Club career

Roberts featured for a sequence of clubs over nearly two decades. His club affiliations included both long spells and shorter moves as he brought experience to different sides:

Across these teams he was often selected for his defensive dependability rather than flair, helping sides stabilize at the back and contributing veteran leadership in later seasons. He combined domestic league work with cup appearances and occasional regional competitions typical of the era.

International career and style

Roberts earned selection for the Wales national team during his career, representing his country at the senior level. He was regarded as a committed defender whose strengths were marking, aerial competence and reading of the game. Contemporary reports and teammates remembered him for consistency and professionalism.

Management, later life and legacy

Towards the end of his playing days Roberts served as player-manager of Oswestry Town for the 1982–1983 season, combining on-field duties with coaching responsibilities. He retired from the professional game soon after and remained part of the football community in various local capacities. Roberts died on 4 January 2016 at the age of 69. He is remembered locally and by supporters for a long and steady career that bridged Welsh and English football traditions.
