Biography and later life
Hayes was born in Seattle, Washington. Over the course of his career he was affiliated with major research centers and played a leading role at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, where he held the title of professor emeritus. In his later years he lived in California and died in Berkeley on 3 February 2017 from pulmonary fibrosis, at the age of 76.
