John L. Harmer (1934–2019), California politician and lieutenant governor

John Loren Harmer was a California Republican state senator (1966–1974) who served briefly as the state's 40th lieutenant governor and authored a book about Ronald Reagan.

John Loren Harmer (April 28, 1934 – December 6, 2019) was an American politician active in California state government. He represented conservative Republican interests during the 1960s and early 1970s and is best known for a long term in the state legislature and a short tenure as lieutenant governor.

Political career

Harmer served in the California State Senate from 1966 until 1974. A member of the Republican Party, he was involved in debates over budget, law and order, and state administration that marked California politics of the era. In 1974 he was named the 40th Lieutenant Governor of California; the appointment was made by outgoing governor Ronald Reagan to fill a vacancy late in Reagan’s administration.
