Janaki Ballabh Patnaik (born 3 January 1927, died 21 April 2015) was a senior Indian politician best known for his long career in state and national public life. Early life and personal background
Patnaik was born in the village of Rameshwar in the Puri district of Odisha. He came from a family rooted in the region and entered public life in the years after Indian independence. In 1953 he married Jayanti Patnaik, who herself later became active in public service; the couple had a son and two daughters. Political career
Patnaik was a prominent member of the Indian National Congress in Odisha. He served two stretches as Chief Minister of Odisha: from 9 June 1980 to 7 December 1989, and again from 15 March 1995 to 17 February 1999. After his terms as chief minister, he was appointed Governor of Assam and held that constitutional office from 27 November 2009 to 11 December 2014.
