Overview

Jan Mayen is a solitary island in the Arctic Ocean belonging to Norway. The island covers about 373 km² and is dominated by the 2,277 m high Beerenberg, a stratovolcano with persistent glaciers on its flanks. Jan Mayen lies roughly 600 km north of Iceland, 500 km east of Greenland and about 1,000 km west of mainland Norway.

Geography and geology

Jan Mayen is volcanic in origin. The central Beerenberg massif rises steeply and supports glaciers that reach close to the shoreline in places. The coastline alternates between steep cliffs and narrow beaches. The island’s climate is polar maritime: cold, windy and influenced by surrounding ocean currents, with frequent fog and strong storms.

History and human presence

European visitors reached Jan Mayen during the early 17th century, when whalers and explorers used the island as a seasonal base; its name commemorates a Dutch seafarer associated with those voyages. Over time permanent settlements did not develop; instead the island has been used for specific operational purposes.

Administration, stations and population

Jan Mayen is administratively part of the Kingdom of Norway. There is no permanent civilian community: the only inhabitants are personnel who staff a meteorological station and a radio station. The island’s meteorological installations (meteorological) provide continuous weather observations important for aviation and northern climate monitoring.

Uses, ecology and notable facts

Today Jan Mayen serves mainly scientific, navigational and communications roles. It is a platform for weather monitoring, oceanographic observation and limited research. The island supports seabird colonies and occasional visits by Arctic wildlife; polar bears have been recorded arriving on drifting ice. Its remote location, volcanic topography and lack of permanent settlements make Jan Mayen one of the more distinct and strictly managed Arctic islands.
