Career and major projects

Groth first rose to prominence in the early 1970s as a member of the progressive rock scene. He was associated with the band progressive rock groups and in particular with Aunt Mary, where he served as lead singer and keyboardist. Aunt Mary made a mark in Norway with a style that combined melodic songwriting and instrumental ambition.

Groth was born in Greåker and raised in a Pentecostal family, a background that informed his later musical choices and repertoire. He was praised for a direct, expressive singing style and for translating religious material into contemporary arrangements, leaving a distinct imprint on Norway's crossover between pop/rock and Christian music.

Jan Groth died of cancer on 27 August 2014 at the age of 68. His career is remembered for the breadth of styles he embraced and for helping to bridge secular and religious audiences in Norwegian popular music.
