History and development

The city grew from a settlement laid out by an early settler, James Prendergast, in the early 1800s and took its name from him. Over the 19th and 20th centuries Jamestown expanded with mills, furniture shops and various light industries that drew waves of immigrants and workers. Like many small industrial cities, it experienced economic restructuring in the later 20th century and has since diversified its economy.

Jamestown lies inland from Lake Erie and is influenced by the lake and the higher terrain of the Allegheny Plateau. The setting includes small rivers and wooded hills. The climate is continental with cold, snowy winters (often affected by lake‑effect snow) and warm summers.
