James Mollison — Australian arts administrator and gallery director

Early life and appointment

Born in Wonthaggi, Victoria, Mollison moved into public cultural work at a time when Australia was defining a national identity for its museums and galleries. He became acting director of the National Gallery of Australia in 1971, a role that involved assembling a national collection, overseeing acquisitions and advising government on the new institution's direction.

Leadership at the National Gallery

As director of the National Gallery of Australia from 1977 to 1990, Mollison expanded the scope of the collection to include important international and Australian works, strengthened exhibition programs and built relationships with donors, artists and curators. His tenure is often credited with helping the NGA to become a major cultural asset for the nation, though some of his decisions prompted public debate about taste and priorities.

Later career and the National Gallery of Victoria

After leaving the NGA, Mollison relocated to Melbourne and served as director of the National Gallery of Victoria. In that capacity he continued to influence acquisition policies and public engagement until the mid-1990s, overseeing exhibitions and initiatives that aimed to broaden audiences and support Australian art practices.
