Overview
Apollo 8 was a milestone mission in NASA's Apollo program, flown in December 1968. It was the first crewed flight to travel beyond low Earth orbit and the first to enter and complete multiple orbits around the Moon. The mission demonstrated that humans could navigate to lunar distance, enter lunar orbit, and return safely to Earth, validating techniques needed for later landing missions.

The three-man crew consisted of Frank Borman (commander), Jim Lovell (command module pilot) and William Anders (lunar module pilot). Although a lunar module was assigned a designation for Anders, no lunar module was carried on this flight; the crew remained in the Command/Service Module for all mission phases.
Spacecraft and trajectory
The launch vehicle was a Saturn V rocket, which placed the Apollo Command/Service Module on a translunar trajectory. After translunar injection the vehicle coasted to lunar distance, performed a burn to enter lunar orbit and later performed a trans‑Earth injection burn for the return. In total the crew completed ten orbits around the Moon during their time in lunar vicinity.

The photograph known as "Earthrise," taken by one of the crew while orbiting the Moon, became one of the mission's most enduring images.
Navigation, guidance and engineering tests
The mission exercised guidance, navigation and control techniques needed for precise lunar trajectories. It validated computer and inertial navigation systems, midcourse correction procedures and the use of ground tracking support for lunar operations. Performance data and crew experience fed directly into planning for subsequent lunar landing missions.
Reentry, recovery and safety
On completion of the lunar orbits the spacecraft executed the burn to return toward Earth, followed by atmospheric reentry and parachute descent to a planned recovery zone. Recovery operations retrieved the crew and spacecraft, and post‑flight assessments examined vehicle systems, crew health and mission data to confirm readiness for future flights.
Legacy and public impact
Apollo 8 had major technical and cultural impact. It proved that humans could travel to and operate at lunar distance, increased confidence in the Apollo architecture and produced powerful imagery and broadcasts that shaped public perception of space exploration. The mission is widely cited as a turning point between preparatory Earth‑orbit tests and later crewed lunar landings.
