Geography and environment

The landscape of Ituri includes lowland rainforest, river valleys and patches of savanna. The region forms part of the greater Congo Basin and contains the well-known Ituri Rainforest, a habitat with high biodiversity that supports species such as the okapi and many forest primates. Rivers and seasonal wetlands shape local transportation and livelihoods.

Administration and demographics

Ituri became a province in the 2015 territorial reorganisation of the country, when larger provinces were subdivided to form smaller administrative units. It is one of the provinces listed among the country's provincial divisions (provincial list). The population is ethnically diverse, including agricultural and hunter‑gatherer communities; groups commonly associated with the area include Hema, Lendu, Alur and several Pygmy peoples.

Economy and human activities

The local economy is based largely on subsistence and small‑scale commercial agriculture, forest products, and artisanal mining. Minerals and gold occur in parts of the province and contribute to livelihoods as well as to economic pressures and migration. Urban markets in Bunia connect surrounding rural areas to national trade networks of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

History and notable issues

Ituri has experienced periods of intense intercommunal violence and insecurity since the late 1990s, including clashes between rival ethnic groups and armed militias. These conflicts have drawn humanitarian and international attention and have affected patterns of displacement and development. At the same time, conservation and research efforts in the rainforest highlight the province's environmental importance.
