Overview
The iPad mini 3 is the third-generation model in Apple’s iPad mini line, introduced by Apple Inc. on October 22, 2014. Marketed simply as the iPad mini 3, it continued the small‑format tablet approach with a 7.9‑inch Retina display and a compact chassis aimed at users who preferred a lighter, more portable iPad. Apple discontinued the model on September 9, 2015 when it was succeeded by the iPad mini 4.
Design and display
Externally the device resembled the preceding iPad mini 2 (Retina) in dimensions and screen resolution (2048×1536). The mini 3 was offered in Space Gray, Silver and — for the first time in the mini line — a Gold finish. The screen retained the Retina pixel density Apple used across its tablets of the era, providing sharp text and images in a small footprint.
Hardware and features
The model introduced Touch ID fingerprint authentication to the iPad mini family, enabling device unlocking and secure payments where supported. Internally it used Apple’s 64‑bit A7 processor paired with the M7 motion co‑processor and was available in multiple storage capacities. Typical features included a rear iSight camera, a front FaceTime camera, Wi‑Fi and optional cellular variants, and an advertised battery life suitable for all‑day casual use.
Software and support
The iPad mini 3 shipped with iOS 8 and benefited from Apple’s update policy for several years. Its software support provided access to the iOS app ecosystem, multitasking features current at the time, and security and compatibility updates through subsequent iOS releases until it was eventually phased out of active product support.
Significance and reception
Reviewers and buyers viewed the mini 3 as an iterative refresh rather than a redesign: the addition of Touch ID and a new color were the most visible changes. For many purchasers the device offered a convenient balance of portability and performance, though some critics noted the modest incremental nature of the upgrade compared with the previous model.
