Design and formation

InterCity 225 sets are not a single multiple‑unit type but a formation that pairs a Class 91 electric locomotive with modern Mark 4 passenger coaches and a Driving Van Trailer at the opposite end. This arrangement allows push‑pull operation so the train can be driven from either end without running the locomotive around. Mark 4 coaches were developed with improved riding comfort and safety features compared with earlier stock; the Class 91 locomotives provide the high‑speed electric traction.

History and development

The fleet was introduced as part of efforts to modernise and electrify key intercity routes. Designed to operate faster than the existing InterCity 125 HST sets, the 225s anticipated higher line speeds and improved journey times. While built for 225 km/h capability, actual operating speeds have been constrained by signalling, track limits and infrastructure, so they normally ran at permitted line speeds.

Service, significance and replacement

For decades the InterCity 225 provided principal long‑distance electric services on the East Coast corridor, offering faster and more comfortable connections between major cities. From the late 2010s, many 225 formations began to be replaced by newer trains introduced under the Intercity Express Programme, notably the bi‑mode and electric Class 800 family Class 800. The replacement reflects changing requirements for flexibility, energy efficiency and onboard amenities.
