Overview

Insulation is any material or system that reduces the transfer of heat, electricity or sound between regions. In building construction it most commonly denotes thermal insulation that slows heat flow through roofs, walls, floors and windows. The term also covers electrical insulation for wires and components and acoustic insulation to limit noise transmission. The basic principle is to introduce resistance or a barrier to reduce unwanted energy transfer.

Types and common materials

Insulation is grouped by the form of energy it resists and by material type. Common categories include:

  • Thermal insulation — fibreglass, mineral wool, cellulose, expanded and extruded polystyrene (EPS/XPS), polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams, aerogel and vacuum insulated panels, reflective foil and insulating boards.
  • Electrical insulation — natural rubber, mica, paper, ceramics and modern polymers such as PVC, polyethylene and PTFE; insulating fluids are used in transformers and switchgear.
  • Acoustic insulation — porous absorbers (fibres and foam), resilient mounts, mass-loaded barriers and specialty panels to reduce airborne and impact noise.

Measurement and performance

Thermal performance is characterised by thermal resistance and conductivity (commonly discussed as R-value or U-value in building practice). Electrical insulation is rated by dielectric strength, breakdown voltage and temperature class. Acoustic performance uses metrics such as STC (sound transmission class) and NRC (noise reduction coefficient). Performance in service depends on correct thickness, continuity and installation quality.

Applications and installation

Thermal insulation is used in homes, commercial buildings, industrial process piping, refrigeration and transport. Electrical insulation is essential in power distribution, motors and electronics. Acoustic insulation appears in studios, theaters and multi-family housing. Typical installation forms include batts, loose-fill, rigid boards, spray-applied foam and laminated systems. Proper installation—avoiding gaps, compression and thermal bridging, and combining insulation with air sealing and moisture control—is as important as material choice.

History, safety and environmental considerations

Humans have used insulating materials for millennia: clothing, straw and animal hides, and later cork and wool. Manufactured materials grew with industrialisation; fibreglass and polymer foams expanded in the 20th century. Historically used materials such as asbestos are now avoided due to health risks. Modern concerns include fire performance, off‑gassing, blowing agents with global warming potential and recyclability; many builders choose recycled cellulose or mineral-based products for lower environmental impact.

Practical selection guidance

  • Match material to application: high temperature or cryogenic service, wet locations, and exposed conditions need specific products.
  • Consider whole-system performance: combine insulation with air barrier, ventilation and appropriate vapor control.
  • Follow codes and standards: local building regulations, electrical ratings and fire safety rules guide final choices.
