Antique is a province on Panay Island in the Philippines, located within the Western Visayas region. The provincial capital is San Jose de Buenavista. For general reference see the province entry and the national context at the Philippines.
Geography and environment
Antique occupies a long, largely mountainous strip along the western side of Panay. The Central Panay mountain range defines much of its interior, while its western shore faces open seas and contains offshore islets. The landscape includes rivers, coastal plains and areas of primary and secondary forest, which support a variety of plant and animal life.
Languages and people
The province is home to several ethnolinguistic communities. Local languages such as Kinaray-a and Hiligaynon are widely spoken alongside Filipino and English. Indigenous groups and long-established coastal communities maintain traditional crafts, fishing practices and rice- and root-crop agriculture.
History and cultural life
Antique has a layered history that includes precolonial settlement, Spanish colonial administration and integration into the modern Philippine state. Cultural traditions are visible in annual festivities and community rites; one notable celebration originating in the province is the Binirayan Festival, which commemorates local origin stories and maritime heritage.
Economy and uses
The local economy blends agriculture, fishing, small-scale industry and mineral extraction. Coastal fisheries and farm produce sustain many towns, while mining activity on some islands has contributed to industrial employment. Tourism increasingly highlights beaches, mountain trekking and protected areas.
