Key dimensions include length (short for subcutaneous, longer for intramuscular or spinal use) and gauge. Gauge numbers are inversely related to diameter: a higher gauge means a finer, narrower bore. Manufacturers may add coatings to reduce tissue drag and provide smoother delivery.

Common types and uses

  • Insulin and subcutaneous needles: short, very fine gauges for frequent self-administration.
  • Intramuscular needles: longer, wider needles to reach muscle tissue for vaccines or drugs that require deeper delivery.
  • Intravenous and butterfly needles: designed for access to veins for infusion, sampling, or transfusion.
  • Spinal and epidural needles: specialized, longer designs used in regional anesthesia or diagnostic taps.

Needles are used for injections (subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous, intradermal), blood sampling, and certain procedures such as aspiration or biopsy.

History, safety and public health

Modern hypodermic injection techniques date to the mid-19th century when clinicians developed hollow needles and syringe assemblies for delivering medicines beneath the skin. Since then the technology has evolved toward standardized, disposable devices to reduce infection risk. Safe handling is critical: accidental needle-stick injuries can transmit bloodborne pathogens, so clinical practice emphasizes single-use needles, engineered safety features, and secure disposal in puncture-resistant sharps containers.
