Overview
Vice-Admiral Husaini Abdullahi (3 March 1939 – 9 July 2019) was a senior officer of the Nigerian Navy and a military administrator who governed Bendel State between March 1976 and July 1978 under the military regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo. His tenure as governor occurred during a period of military rule in Nigeria when senior service officers were frequently appointed to run state administrations. Abdullahi's death on 9 July 2019 was reported nationally, noting his service in both naval and civilian administrative roles.
Career and naval service
Born in 1939, Abdullahi rose through the ranks of the Nigerian Navy to attain the rank of Vice-Admiral, a senior flag rank denoting long service and high command responsibility. As a naval officer he would have been involved in the professional, operational, and administrative work typical of senior service personnel, including maritime security, training oversight and logistics. Senior navy officers of his generation often combined military duties with public administration when assigned to civil posts by the federal government.
Governorship of Bendel State
Appointed in March 1976, Abdullahi served as the military governor of Bendel State until July 1978. In this role he was responsible for the executive administration of the state, security and law-and-order matters, and coordination of public services during a time when civilian institutions were subordinated to the armed forces. Bendel State at that time covered a large and diverse territory which was later reorganized into smaller states; notably, in 1991 Bendel was divided into Edo and Delta states.
Responsibilities and activities
Military governors typically managed a broad set of tasks. During Abdullahi's administration those tasks would have included:
- Maintaining public security and overseeing local law enforcement;
- Supervising the delivery and administration of public services such as health, education and infrastructure;
- Implementing federal directives and coordinating with military and civil authorities;
- Managing state finances and appointments to local administrative posts.
Later life and legacy
After leaving the governorship in 1978 Abdullahi returned to the rhythms of senior military life until eventual retirement. He is remembered as part of the cohort of Nigerian military officers who played dual roles as service leaders and state administrators during the country’s post-independence history.
