Geography and natural features

Huerfano County lies along the eastern flank of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and includes the prominent Spanish Peaks, two volcanic mountains that define the local skyline. The county contains volcanic buttes, rugged canyons, high meadows and timbered slopes, with significant portions of public land and forest. Much of the higher country is managed as part of San Isabel National Forest and adjacent wilderness areas; those public lands provide habitat, water sources and recreational access.

History

Settlement increased in the 19th century with Hispanic and Anglo ranching, railroad construction, coal mining and timber harvesting. Coal production and related industries shaped towns around Walsenburg and nearby mining sites; as mineral extraction declined, ranching, timber and service activities remained central to the local economy. Historical sites and remnants of mine infrastructure are visible across the county.
