Heterotroph

A heterotroph is an organism that relies on organic compounds produced by other organisms for carbon and often energy, encompassing animals, fungi, many microbes, and diverse ecological roles like consumers and decomposers.

A heterotroph is an organism that obtains its carbon by consuming organic compounds made by other organisms rather than fixing carbon dioxide directly. In most heterotrophs those organic molecules also serve as the primary energy source. This broad category includes animals, fungi, many protists and bacteria, and some archaea; their lifestyles range from free-living consumers to parasites and decomposers.

Characteristics and metabolic categories

Heterotrophs can be classified by how they obtain carbon and energy. Chemoheterotrophs oxidize organic molecules for both carbon and energy and include most animals and saprotrophic fungi. Photoheterotrophs use light as an energy source but still require organic carbon. Some organisms are facultative heterotrophs and can switch between heterotrophy and autotrophy under changing conditions. Closely related terms are mixotroph (combining modes) and parasite (deriving nutrients from a living host).

Common ecological roles

  • Consumers: herbivores, carnivores and omnivores that transfer energy through food webs.
  • Decomposers (saprotrophs): fungi and many bacteria that break down dead organic matter and recycle nutrients.
  • Parasites and pathogens: organisms that obtain nutrients from living hosts, sometimes causing disease.
  • Detritivores: animals and microbes that ingest and fragment dead organic material.

Etymology and distinction

The word derives from Greek roots such as heteros (other) and concepts of nourishment. A heterotrophic organism depends on external sources of organic matter and so consumes organic substrates or substrates to obtain building blocks and energy. Its defining requirement is organic carbon, setting heterotrophs apart from autotrophs that fix carbon dioxide.

Heterotrophs are central to ecosystems: they drive energy transfer, shape population dynamics, and mediate decomposition and nutrient cycling. In applied contexts, heterotrophic microbes are used in fermentation, bioremediation and industrial biotechnology, while parasitic heterotrophs are important in medicine and agriculture. Research continues into the diversity and metabolic flexibility of heterotrophic life across environments from soils and oceans to host-associated microbiomes.
