The station dates from the period of rapid railway expansion in London during the 19th century. Herne Hill station is valued by local residents for access to green space and sporting venues. Brockwell Park and the historic Herne Hill Velodrome lie within easy walking distance, attracting visitors for events as well as everyday recreation. The station therefore supports both daily commuter flows and occasional peaks associated with local events.

Proposals and planning

Transport for London has at times examined whether the Victoria line could be extended south to improve turnaround and resilience at the southern end of that tube route. Studies indicate an extension to Herne Hill was considered as one option, but it has not been prioritised because other projects show stronger business cases.
