Rauch was born in Krems an der Donau, in Lower Austria, and built a research career centered in Austria while collaborating internationally. He led experimental groups that developed and refined perfect-crystal interferometers for neutrons and advanced techniques in neutron beam control. In recognition of his scientific standing he became a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 1979.
Research and significance
Rauch's experiments used the wave nature of neutrons to observe interference effects analogous to those seen with light, but with massive, neutral particles sensitive to magnetic and gravitational influences. These studies helped clarify aspects of quantum phase, coherence, and the behavior of spinors under rotation.
