Overview

Hayat Saif, born Saiful Islam Khan on 16 December 1942, was a prominent Bangladeshi poet and essayist who played a visible role in Bengali letters from the 1960s onward. He wrote in Bengali and helped shape modern poetic discourse in Bangladesh as both a creator and a critic. Saif died on 13 May 2019 in Dhaka, leaving behind a body of work and a reputation for clear, reflective verse.

Life and career

Saif combined a literary life with long service in the civil administration. He served in various government posts and retired in 1999 as chairman of the National Board of Revenue, a senior fiscal position. Alongside his bureaucratic career he remained active in public life, notably in youth development through the scouting movement. His dual vocation—public servant by day, poet and critic in his cultural work—helped him sustain influence across different circles.

Literary work and style

Writings by Hayat Saif include eight poetry collections, plus numerous critical essays and reviews. He emerged during a period of intense literary activity in the region and is frequently associated with modernizing trends in Bengali poetry: attentive to urban life, history, and moral complexity, yet often expressed in economical and measured language. As a literary critic, he contributed to debates about form, translation, and the role of the poet in society.

Honors and public recognition

Saif received a number of national and international honors during his lifetime. Among them was the Ekushey Padak in 2018, one of Bangladesh's highest civilian awards for contributions to culture and letters. For his long service to global scouting he was recognized with the Bronze Wolf Award in 2005, the World Organization of the Scout Movement's principal distinction.
