The exact origin story is missing. HarperCollins is also based on Avon and Morrow, which were once independent publishers before Hearst absorbed them into his News Corporation, whose publishing division was later in turn bought by Murdoch. Avon and Morrow are listed here only as imprints.

HarperCollins is an American publishing house headquartered in New York. HarperCollins is a subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, formed by the merger of the American publishing house Harper & Row (owned by News Corporation since 1987) and the British publishing house William Collins & Sons in 1990.

Worldwide Chief Executive Officer of HarperCollins since 2008 is Brian Murray, who replaced Jane Friedman (since 1997).

In October 2011, it was announced that HarperCollins was acquiring the Thomas Nelson publishing house from Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. for an undisclosed price. This makes HarperCollins the third owner of the company in the last eighteen months. HarperCollins has combined Christian religious publishers Zondervan and Thomas Nelson and Bible software company Olive Tree Bible Software, Inc. into the HarperCollins Christian Publishing division.

At the end of 2014, it became known that Collins Bartholomew Ltd, part of HarperCollins UK, had published a school atlas for the Arab-Muslim market in which Israel was missing from the map and its territory was added to Jordan and Syria. Collins Bartholomew's reasoning was that it was unacceptable to its Persian Gulf clientele for Israel to be included on maps of the Middle East. Following the news and protests, the publisher apologized on Facebook and claimed the withdrawal and destruction of the remaining stock.
