Overview

Harold Basch (Hebrew: הרולד בש) was an American‑born chemist who became a prominent educator and researcher in Israel. Born in New York City (New York City) on 29 November 1940, he spent most of his academic career at Bar‑Ilan University, where he developed a long‑standing program in theoretical and computational chemistry. Basch combined teaching, research and supervision of graduate students and authored more than 180 scientific papers and book chapters over several decades.

Academic career

Basch joined the Chemistry Department at Bar‑Ilan University in 1970 as an associate professor and was promoted to full professor in 1977. During his tenure he taught courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, advised doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, and helped establish computational chemistry as a central component of the department's research activities. His work was carried out in the context of a rapidly growing field that applies theoretical models and numerical methods to chemical problems.

Research focus and methods

Although Basch's publications span a variety of topics within computational chemistry, they share a common emphasis on using electronic structure methods and molecular modeling to explore chemical structure and reactivity. Computational chemistry encompasses a range of techniques — from ab initio and density functional theory calculations to molecular mechanics and dynamics — that provide insight into bonding, energetics and reaction pathways without relying solely on experiment.

Contributions and legacy

Basch's long publication record and his role as an educator left a lasting impression on colleagues and students. He contributed to the growth of computational chemistry in Israel by mentoring researchers who continued work in academia and industry. His legacy includes both the scientific literature he produced and the generation of chemists he trained, many of whom carried on research in theoretical methods and applied modeling.

Later life and death

Professor Basch lived and worked in Israel for most of his career. He passed away in Ramat Gan (Ramat Gan) on 8 November 2018 at the age of 77. Bar‑Ilan University and the broader scientific community remembered him for his scholarship and commitment to education; further institutional details are accessible through Bar‑Ilan's resources (Bar‑Ilan University).
