Harghita County (Romanian: Judeţul Harghita; Hungarian: Hargita megye) is an administrative region in central Romania, located in the eastern part of Transylvania. Its administrative center is Miercurea-Ciuc. The county is known for its mountainous terrain, strong Hungarian (Székely) cultural presence, and a landscape shaped by ancient volcanic activity.

Geography and environment

Harghita occupies a high plateau crossed by the Harghita and Giurgeu ridges of the Eastern Carpathians. The area includes volcanic massifs, conifer forests, peat bogs and numerous mineral springs. Altitudes vary from river valleys to mountain passes; this variety supports distinct ecosystems and outdoor recreation opportunities such as hiking, skiing and nature tourism.

History and population

The county lies within the historical Székely Land, a region with centuries-old Hungarian-speaking communities. Over time administrative borders changed with shifting states in Central Europe, but the cultural imprint of Hungarian traditions, language and folk crafts remains strong. Today the population includes significant Hungarian and Romanian communities living alongside smaller groups.

Economy and tourism

Economic activity centers on forestry, wood processing, agriculture adapted to mountain conditions, and services. Harghita also attracts visitors to its spa towns and natural attractions. Notable resorts and attractions include mineral baths and small spa towns that draw health tourism, as well as winter sports facilities and ethnographic sites.

Culture and notable places

Local culture blends Székely Hungarian customs, Romanian influences and rural mountain traditions. Miercurea-Ciuc is a cultural and administrative hub; other important towns and sites include:

  • Miercurea-Ciuc (county seat) — cultural, administrative and sporting center
  • Băile Tușnad — small spa town known for mineral springs
  • Odorheiu Secuiesc and Gheorgheni — regional market towns with local crafts
  • Harghita Mountains — hiking, ski slopes and protected natural areas

Harghita County stands out for its combination of natural landscapes, spa and outdoor recreation, and a distinctive multilingual cultural life that makes it an important part of Transylvania's geographic and cultural mosaic.
