Overview

Henri Carel Willem "Hans" Schnitger (5 August 1915 – 2 March 2013) was a Dutch field hockey player best known for his role on the Netherlands national team at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. He was a member of the Dutch side that won the Olympic bronze medal in field hockey.

Olympic participation

Schnitger took part in the 1936 tournament, appearing in all five matches as a forward. The 1936 Games were held in Berlin and remain one of the better documented pre‑war Olympic hockey competitions. Playing every match indicates that Schnitger was a regular selection and an active contributor to the team's podium finish.

Playing position and role

As a forward, Schnitger's responsibilities would have focused on attacking play: creating scoring opportunities, supporting teammates in the circle and pressing the opposition defence. Forwards in field hockey are typically valued for speed, ball control and finishing ability; appearing in each match suggests he fulfilled a consistent tactical role for the Dutch side.

Life and local ties

Schnitger was born in the city of Enschede and remained connected to his hometown throughout his life. He lived in Enschede until his death on 2 March 2013 at the age of 97, reportedly of natural causes. His long life made him part of the generation of athletes who bridged the interwar and postwar eras of international sport.

Legacy and context

The Dutch bronze in 1936 contributed to the Netherlands' early Olympic field hockey record and helped sustain the sport's popularity in the country. Schnitger's participation is recorded in Olympic and sporting archives and he is remembered as one of the players who helped establish the Netherlands as a competitive nation in field hockey.
