Enschede combines an historic core with modern neighbourhoods and university campus areas. History and development

Originally a medieval market town, Enschede grew steadily during the Industrial Revolution, especially as a centre for textile manufacturing. Over the 20th century the city diversified its economy after the decline of large-scale textile mills. Enschede experienced a major tragedy in 2000 when a fireworks warehouse explosion caused significant damage to part of the city; the event prompted extensive reconstruction and changes to safety regulation and urban planning.

Enschede is home to notable institutions such as the University of Twente and several applied research centers, which link academic work to local industry.
