Overview

Enschede is a city and municipality in the eastern Netherlands, located in the province of Overijssel. With a population of about 160,000 (2021 estimate), it is the largest city in the province and serves as a commercial and cultural hub for the surrounding area. The city lies close to the international border with Germany and is commonly regarded as the informal capital of the Twente region. In Low Saxon the city is known as Eanske.

Enschede combines an historic core with modern neighbourhoods and university campus areas. The central shopping district and market square are surrounded by residential quarters, light industrial parks and green spaces. History and development

Originally a medieval market town, Enschede grew steadily during the Industrial Revolution, especially as a centre for textile manufacturing. Over the 20th century the city diversified its economy after the decline of large-scale textile mills. Enschede experienced a major tragedy in 2000 when a fireworks warehouse explosion caused significant damage to part of the city; the event prompted extensive reconstruction and changes to safety regulation and urban planning.
