Overview

Hanover Parish occupies a compact portion of northwestern Jamaica along the Caribbean Sea. It is part of Cornwall County and its administrative centre is Lucea, a town with a mixture of colonial architecture and contemporary services. Hanover is among the island's smaller parishes by land area and population, giving it a less urbanized, more rural character than many other parts of Jamaica.

Geography and environment

The parish features a coastal plain with beaches and small bays, backed by low hills and agricultural land. The shoreline and reef-fringed waters support fishing and small-scale tourism. Much of the inland area is devoted to farms, pastures and scattered settlements rather than dense urban development.

History and heritage

Hanover developed under British colonial rule and was named for the House of Hanover during the era when the island's parishes were established. Throughout the colonial period the local economy centred on plantations, ports and shipping. Remnants of that era survive in Lucea and other settlements as historic buildings, fortifications and cemetery sites that reflect the parish's long, complex past.

Economy and society

Today the economy combines agriculture, fishing, small commercial enterprises and an expanding tourism sector focused on beaches, guesthouses and heritage sites. Farmers grow a mix of export and subsistence crops while local fishers supply nearby markets. Community life includes parish events, market days and cultural celebrations tied to Jamaican traditions.
