Johanna "Hannie" van Leeuwen (18 January 1926 – 1 August 2018) was a Dutch politician whose career spanned local administration and the national legislature. Born in Delft, she came to prominence as a member of the Anti-Revolutionary Party and continued her public work after that party joined with others to form the Christian Democratic Appeal. Her public life is marked by long service, practical municipal leadership and nearly half a century of engagement in Dutch public affairs.
Political career and offices
Van Leeuwen held elected and appointed positions at different levels of government. Nationally, she served in the House of Representatives as a member of parliament from 1966 until 1978 and later represented her party in the Senate from 1995 to 2007. At the municipal level she was an alderwoman in the growing town of Zoetermeer and acted as interim mayor in the municipalities of Hazerswoude and Nootdorp. These roles illustrate a career that moved between hands-on local administration and legislative responsibilities.
Context and political background
Van Leeuwen began her political life in the Anti-Revolutionary Party, a Protestant Christian-democratic formation that played a central role in Dutch politics during the twentieth century. When the ARP merged with other parties to create the Christian Democratic Appeal, she continued her affiliation with that new political family. Her generation of politicians helped shape post-war Dutch social and municipal policy through a blend of faith-inspired values and pragmatic governance.
Areas of work and public image
Throughout her years in office she combined local executive duties with parliamentary service, a pattern that emphasised both policy-making and administrative delivery. Colleagues and commentators described her as an experienced municipal leader and a steady presence in debates over local government and national legislation. Her long Senate tenure allowed her to contribute to legislative scrutiny and continuity in the upper house.
Legacy and later life
After leaving the Senate in 2007 she remained a respected figure within her party and among municipal administrators. Van Leeuwen died in Rotterdam on 1 August 2018 at the age of 92. Her life is often cited as an example of a politician who bridged municipal responsibility and national representation, illustrating the role of Christian-democratic politicians in the Netherlands during the latter half of the twentieth century.
