Overview

Hampton is an independent city in southeastern Virginia within the coastal region of the United States. It lies at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and forms part of the greater Hampton Roads metropolitan area alongside cities such as Norfolk and Virginia Beach. The city has a population of roughly 140,000 residents and combines waterfront neighborhoods, industrial piers, and historic districts. The campus of Hampton University, a historically black university, is one of its best-known institutions.

Geography and character

Hampton occupies a peninsula and includes several waterfront points, beaches and parks. Its location on Hampton Roads — the large natural harbor — has shaped local industry, transportation and recreation. Neighborhoods range from older downtown and residential blocks to waterfront commercial areas and federal installations.

History and development

Long inhabited by Indigenous peoples before European contact, the area became one of the earliest points of English settlement in North America. The Kecoughtan community and later colonial outposts gave rise to a port economy, shipbuilding and trade. Hampton saw important events during the Civil War era and later developed as a center for maritime, military and scientific activities.

Economy, institutions and importance

Hampton hosts major federal and research facilities that influence its economy: notably aerospace and defense organizations. The presence of research centers and bases has fostered a cluster of high-technology jobs, education and supporting services. Higher education, medical centers and port-related commerce are also significant employers.
