Guainía is a department of Colombia whose administrative seat is the town of Inírida. It occupies a large, sparsely populated area in the eastern part of the country.
Location
Guainía lies along Colombia’s international frontier, sharing borders with Venezuela to the north and east and with Brazil to the southeast. The department is predominantly covered by tropical rainforest and forms part of the greater Amazon region.
Geography and environment
The landscape is characterized by dense forest, extensive river networks and areas of lowland terrain. Rivers are a major means of transport between communities, and the department contains significant areas of ecological importance within the Guiana Shield and Amazon Basin.
People and administration
Guainía has a small population relative to its land area and includes a number of Indigenous communities with distinct languages and cultures. The department is divided into municipalities and other administrative subdivisions, with Inírida serving as the political and economic center.
Economy and access
Economic activity is limited and largely based on subsistence agriculture, fishing, small-scale trade and services in river towns. Overland access is restricted in many parts of Guainía, so rivers and air links play a central role for movement of people and goods.
