The Guadalupe bass (Micropterus treculii) is a species of freshwater black bass in the sunfish family (Centrarchidae), native to central Texas. Recognized by anglers and biologists for its preference for clear, flowing streams and rocky riffles, it is valued both as a sport fish and as an indicator of riverine ecosystem health.

Identification and characteristics

Adults have a streamlined, laterally compressed body with a generally olive to brown back, lighter sides marked with dark streaks or blotches, and a pale belly. The mouth is large and typical of Micropterus species, adapted for a diet of aquatic insects and smaller fishes. Typical adult lengths range from modest angler catches to larger specimens; individuals are known for strong, acrobatic runs when hooked.

Range, habitat, and ecology

Guadalupe bass are endemic to river systems in central Texas, most notably the Guadalupe River watershed and adjacent drainages. They prefer clear, cool to warm flowing water with rocky or gravel substrates, riffles and runs, and occasional pools. Their diet consists of aquatic and terrestrial insects, crayfish, and small fish; young fish feed heavily on invertebrates before shifting toward more fish-based prey.

Life history and reproduction

Spawning generally occurs in spring as water temperatures rise. Like other black bass, Guadalupe bass build and defend shallow gravel nests where eggs are deposited and guarded by the male. Juveniles grow through their first seasons in stream margins and backwaters before moving to faster habitat as they mature.

Conservation, management, and angling

Because the Guadalupe bass has a restricted native range, it faces threats from habitat modification, water pollution, altered river flows, and introduction of nonnative bass species that can compete and hybridize with native populations. These pressures have prompted conservation and management efforts such as habitat restoration, angling regulations, and targeted stocking and genetic-restoration programs in some river systems. The species remains popular with fly fishers and sport anglers who prize its fighting ability and the challenge of catching it in stream habitat.
