Andrzej Wincenty Górski (15 August 1920 – 22 November 2017) was a Polish chemist and university professor known for his teaching and work in inorganic chemistry and the systematics of chemical objects. Born in Warsaw, he spent much of his professional life at the Warsaw University of Technology where he combined research with extensive textbook authorship and lecturing.

Academic career

Górski served as Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the Warsaw University of Technology. His academic activity included supervising students, lecturing on core chemical subjects and participating in departmental administration. He contributed to shaping undergraduate and graduate curricula in chemistry, emphasizing clear presentation of foundational concepts alongside rigorous treatment of inorganic materials and reactions.

Research and interests

While best known in educational circles, Górski also published a substantial number of research articles. His work focused on the systematics or classification of chemical objects — an area concerned with organizing chemical species, compounds and concepts in coherent schemes that support teaching, nomenclature and research. This interest bridged practical inorganic chemistry and the theoretical frameworks used to describe chemical diversity.

Textbooks and teaching

Górski authored several widely used academic textbooks. Notably he wrote a text titled "General Chemistry" and a two-volume textbook called "Chemistry" intended for university students. These books were designed to present fundamentals in a systematic and accessible way, combining descriptive chemistry, essential theory and worked examples to aid comprehension. For many Polish chemistry students his textbooks served as standard course literature.

Legacy and importance

Górski's influence is visible in both chemical education and the community of inorganic chemists in Poland. His textbooks and classroom methods helped to standardize instruction across institutions, and his research on classification contributed to scholarly discussions about how chemical knowledge is organized. Colleagues and former students remember him for clear exposition and dedication to teaching.

Later life and death

Andrzej Wincenty Górski died in Warsaw on 22 November 2017 at the age of 97 from complications following a stroke. Notices of his passing and brief biographical summaries were published in Polish academic and local outlets announcing his death. His publications and textbooks remain part of the historical record of Polish chemical education.
