Gréasque is a small commune in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southern France. It had 3,705 inhabitants at the 2004 census. The town occupies a modest site of hills and woodland typical of the inland suburbs east of Marseille and near Aix-en-Provence.

Geography and setting

Set on low ridges and valleys, Gréasque lies within a Mediterranean landscape of scrub, pine and cultivated plots. The local climate is Mediterranean with hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters. Its position makes it part of a suburban and semi-rural belt that combines residential neighbourhoods with remnants of past industry.

History

Gréasque developed principally as a mining town. From the 19th century into the 20th century the extraction of coal and associated industries shaped the village's economy, housing and social life. As mining declined in the later 20th century, the community shifted toward services and commuter ties with larger nearby cities. The mining past remains an important element of local identity.

Sights and heritage

Several local attractions interpret the town's industrial and rural heritage. Visitors can find preserved miners' housing, former industrial buildings and a local museum dedicated to mining history that explains the techniques and daily life of the miners. Other features include a parish church, community halls and paths for walking through the surrounding hills.

Today Gréasque functions as a small service centre and residential community. Local shops, small businesses and municipal services support residents while many commute to larger employment centres nearby. Transport links are provided by regional roads and public transit connections into the greater Aix–Marseille area. Governance is conducted at the municipal level in the French communal system, with the town council managing local affairs and cultural programming.
