Creation and subject

Eric Enstrom produced the image in the town of Bovey, Minnesota. The sitter is identified as Charles Wilden, a local man whose bowed head and clasped hands give the scene a devotional character. Although appearing spontaneous, the photograph is a posed portrait: Enstrom arranged lighting and props to convey a mood of prayerful thanksgiving rather than to document a candid moment.
